Bug#248116: Problem setting up NewWorld boot partition on iBook G4
Package: Partman
Tag: d-i
Hi, trying to install Debian sarge using Beta 4. I try to install side by side
with existing OSX. I had partitioned my harddrive in advance using Mac
partitioning tools. Here I had one partition for OSX, one for data from
different cvs and subversion repositories, and one for my debian system. For
the to latter partitions I choosed "Unix" for filesystem from the
partitioning tool in OSX.
Booting up the install disk went fine. No problems until I should partition.
Choosing manual partition, and I get this partiton table:
IDE1 master - 30.0 GB TOSHIBA MK3021GAS
#1 32.2 kB Apple
134.1 MB FREE SPACE
#3 12.5 GB hfs+ Apple_HFS_Un
#4 8.9 MB hfs+ eXternal boo
#5 6.1 GB Apple_UFS_Un
#6 8.9 MB hfs+ eXternal boo
#7 11.2 GB Apple_UFS_Un
I then erased partition #7 and let partman auto-create my partitions (/
and /home) there. Resulting in this table:
IDE1 master - 30.0 GB TOSHIBA MK3021GAS
#1 32.2 kB Apple
134.1 MB FREE SPACE
#3 12.5 GB hfs+ Apple_HFS_Un
#4 8.9 MB hfs+ eXternal boo
#5 6.1 GB Apple_UFS_Un
#6 8.9 MB hfs+ eXternal boo
#2 3.1 GB ᛋ ☺ ext3 untitled /
#7 7.7 GB ☺ ext3 untitled /home
#8 391.5 MB ☺ swap swap swap
I then choosed "Finish partitioning and write changes to disk"
I then got a message about
"No NewWorld partition was found. The yaboot boot loader requires an
Apple_Bootstrap partition at least 820KB in size."
I then went back to the partition menu and made a NewWorld partition of 2 MB
in the FREE SPACE between #1 and #3.
For usage method a choosed "Use the partition as a NewWorld boot partition",
and I called the partition: Apple_Bootstrap
The partitiontable was now like this:
IDE1 master - 30.0 GB TOSHIBA MK3021GAS
#1 32.2 kB Apple
#9 1.9 MB ᛋ ☻ boot Apple_Bootst
132.2 MB FREE SPACE
#3 12.5 GB hfs+ Apple_HFS_Un
#4 8.9 MB hfs+ eXternal boo
#5 6.1 GB Apple_UFS_Un
#6 8.9 MB hfs+ eXternal boo
#2 3.1 GB ᛋ ☺ ext3 untitled /
#7 7.7 GB ☺ ext3 untitled /home
#8 391.5 MB ☺ swap swap swap
When I finished the partitoning I still got the message "No NewWorld partition
was found." This time I ignored it.
I started the base system installation. That went fine. But "Install yaboot on
a hard disk" failed of course. I got the message:
«No hard disk were found which have an "Apple_Bootstrap" partition. You must
create an 800K partition named "bootstrap", with type "Apple_Bootstrap".»
This gave inconsistent information related to the previous message. Here it
stands that the partition should be named "bootstrap", that was not mentioned
before. The size should be 800K, last time it was at least 820 KB, and the
type should be "Apple_Bootstrap".
I went back to the partman tool and renamed partition #9 to "bootstrap". I
changed the size to 800 KB, but I couldn't change the type, the only option
is NewWorld partition.
When finishing partitioning I still get the message about missing NewWorld
partition, and I can still not install yaboot. Same message as befor.
