yes it would help, there has been a few reports (especially from people
with laptops) that the keyboard doesn't work under the 2.4 kernel. Some
have indicated that the 2.6 kernel solved the problems and I think it
would help in trying to spot a pattern here.
You don't need to run the full installation again, just try booting the
debian installer with 2.6 ("boot: linux26") and see if the keyboard
works at the first screen or not.
Incidentally i am now trying Knoppix 3.4 which i believe is at heart a
debian distribution, and this works fine on both 2.4.26 and 2.6.5.
