INSTALL REPORT

Debian-installer-version: beta2 (Jan 14, 2004)
  http://people.debian.org/cdimage/testing/netinst/i386/beta2/sarge-i386-netinst.iso
uname -a: Linux donald 2.6.0 #5 Thu Dec 18 11:22:09 CET 2003 i686 GNU/Linux
(please consider that this is my working system, not the just
  installed sarge test system)
Date: Jan 14, 2004 12:00 CET
Method:
I used the 100 MB netinst CD without network connection (I have an
etherned card, but pulled out the cable for testing purposes).
I installed LILO into the partition and used my grub with
chainloader to boot it. It worked well.

Machine: Customary desktop
Processor: AMD Duron 1.3 GHz
Memory: 256 MB
Root Device: IDE, /dev/hda1
Root Size/partition table:
	root@donald:/home/martin$ env LANG=C /sbin/fdisk /dev/discs/disc0/disc -l

(the other partitions were not used during test install)

Comments/Problems:

- I chosed language de-de; at the next screen (keyboard layout) the
list shows wrong umlauts; the strings seem to be encoded in UTF-8,
but they are displayed in latin1. Title and buttons at this window
and all other forms are displayed okay.

- the hostname was asked twice (first and very last question of
network configuration, with all IP stuff in between)

- I pulled out the ethernet cable for testing purposes, I wanted to
install a non-networked system. It would be nice if d-i would ask
_whether_ I want to configure network if DHCP is not available and
not just force me to enter some IPs and gateways I don't have.
Of course this may only be because I do have an installed network
card. Is network configuration skipped when there is no network
  card?

- LILO installation: instead of letting the user install clumsy devfs
names, there should be a list of the MBR (i. e. /dev/.../disc) and
all available partitions. I know and use devfs, but many users
certainly don't know that they have to replace 'disc' by 'part1'
when they don't want to install into the MBR. At least it should be
  explained.

- base system does not install fsck.reiserfs, but that is already at
  the errata list.

- although I chose de-de language in d-i, there were no locale set in
the installed system; it would be nice if this would work. I just
don't know if this is d-i's or base-config's responsibility?

All in all, the installation process worked very well now, contrary to
many problems in beta1 (repeated DHCP attempts, non-booting ISO etc.).
You have done a GREAT job, thank you for this!

Martin
