The 'rw' seems to be essential. The silo.conf on the current
(2004-APR-27) netinst ISO has 'root=/dev/rd/0' but no 'rw',
and it does _not_ boot out of the box (just hitting ENTER at
the SILO prompt) but needs the extra argument. If I omit the
'root...' line, the last 4 lines say:
   VFS: mounted root(ext2 file system).
   Mounted devfs on /dev
Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 00:00
Press L1-A to return to the boot prom

If I enter 'linux rw', the installer starts fine.

Actually, SILO knows my german keyboard layout - thats GREAT if
you must enter 'root=/dev/rd/0' :-). The installer on VC1 or VC2
assumes standard american layout. I got no idea how to interpret
the log file, so I attached the complete syslog.

Actually, DHCP wored, as 'ifconfig' on VC2 shows. So I assume the
reported error is due to low mem.

Actually, I do not need a partitioner, as the disk is already
partitioned from an old RH 5.x install. Older isos/netboot
allowed me to bypass partman, make ext2 fs manually and get
them mounted and the base system installed. This is no longer
possible, so I am lost here, as partman needs more memory.

Don't get me wrong: I do not intend to actually install sarge
on this box, so I do not want the old isos back. I just can't
test DI any more on this box beyond this point.
