sarge-i386-businesscard.iso: INIT Panics after upgrade

Dear all,

I downloaded sarge-i386-businesscard.iso today, installed it and was
really amazed of this installer!  Thanks.

However, when I tried to upgrade the kernel from the default 2.4.26 to
2.6.5-1-386, INIT paniced when /etc/init.d/rcS launched
    mountvirtfs
As a consequence, I have not been able to login anymore -- neither to
reboot since /dev/tty (IIRC) was read-only.

Has anybody seen the same problem?
