Bug#244539: firewire not supported

Yes, d-i seems to basically not have userspace support for Firewire yet.
If I can get hold of a Firewire enclosure and a spare disk then I may
have time to do this.

Failed in what way? If the installer correctly identified the bootstrap
partition location then I don't think it's due to (3). If it falls over
without a good error message during the "Probing for other operating
systems" step, that was an os-prober bug and has been fixed in os-prober
0.07.
