I can reproduce the problem by simply running partman on vt 2 on i386.
There TERM is linux and LANG is not set. I also see the problem if TERM
is vt100. Actually, the only way I can get it to work there is by
setting LANG=C.UTF-8, and belive me, that looks very funky.
