In fact this is implemented in the latest d-i daily builds. We support windows, dos, freedos, the hurd, most other linux distributions (lilo and grub). That is exactly the disk that is in > the CDROM. It sounds like you're using beta 3 of the installer, which sets up a broken /etc/fstab that cannot mount the cdrom properly. See the errata.
