Probably you needed to tell it an initrd to load.

In fact this is implemented in the latest d-i daily builds. We support
windows, dos, freedos, the hurd, most other linux distributions (lilo
and grub). All are automatically detected and added to the grub menu.

It sounds like you're using beta 3 of the installer, which sets up a
broken /etc/fstab that cannot mount the cdrom properly. See the errata.
This is fixed in the daily builds.
