Package: kernel-image-2.4.25-1-386
Version: sarge installer beta 3
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

A big problem during the sarge installation on an HP server with a
RAID SCSI controler. (tested with sarge beta 3 installer).

The base installation process (before reboot) aborts at 86%, on the
package kernel-image-2.4.25-1-386, with the following message on
the install screen (main console) :

===========
Unable to install the selected kernel.

An error was returned while trying to install the kernel into
the target system.
Kernel pack : 'kernel-image-2.4.25-1-386'

Check /var/log/messages or see virtual console 3 for details
===========

Report on virtual console 3 :

=========
Setting up kernel-image-2.4.25-1-386

You are attempting ton install a kernel version that is the same as
the version currently running (2.4.25-1-386). The module list is quite
likely to have changed, and the modules dependency file
/lib/modules/2.4.25-1-386/modules.dep needs to be re-built.
It can not be built directly now, since the module list for the running
kernel are likely to be different from the kernel installed. I'm
creating a new modules.dep file, but that may not be correct. It shall
be regenerated correctly et next reboot.

I repeat : [... ...] You need to reboot soon.

Please hit Return to continue.

/usr/sbin/mkinitrd : constituent device /dev/cciss/disc0/part2 does not
exist.
Failed to create initrd image.

dpkg : error processing kernel-image-2.4.25-1-386 (--configure) :
subprocess post-install. script returned error exit status 1.
=========

I suppose the problem is an incompatibility with the cciss module,
for the RAID SCSI controller (two 40 Gb disks), since the same beta 3
installer runs well on another PC with an IDE disk.

It's very important for me to be able to quickly install this server
with Debian. I'm ready to further investigate the problem, if someone
can give any hints or diagnostic tools.
