Bug#240158: lowmem install can't configure network interface with pcmcia card

Package: install
Severity: normal

I am using Debian Installer to do a net install from floppy disks on an
old Pentium 133 laptop with 32 Mb of RAM.

After booting and reading the root and net-drivers disks, I get asked
what modules to install for my network card. I choose the xirc2ps_cs
driver for my Xircom Credit Card pcmcia card, then get returned to the
same screen full of network module choices. I hit escape to go to the
main installer menu, and choose "Configure the network". Immediately I
get a red error screen which says "no network interfaces detected."

At this point, I go to the shell and type 'ifconfig'. No network
interfaces appear, I get no output from ifconfig.

Typing 'lsmod' shows that the xirc2ps_cs and pcmcia-core modules are
installed.

Since I am trying to use my local ADSL service, I run 'dhclient eth0'.
This spits out several error messages, including:
    SIOCGIFFLAGS: no such device
    /etc/dhclient-script: 99: sleep: not found
socket: address family not supported by protocol

Just for the heck of it, I also tried
    'ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up'
This didn't work either, it failed with these errors:

    SIOCSIFADDR: no such device
    SIOCSIONETMASK: no such device
    SIOCGIFFLAGS: no such device
