Comments/Problems:
1. Base system install ended in the error message
"Debootstrap ended with an error"
followed by
"tar: unrecognized file type"
debootstrap.log contained only a copy of
"tar: unrecognized file type"
The error log was empty.
2. The "Configure and lay out" screen offered to create only ext2
filesystems. ext3 and reiser were not offered.
AMENDED REPORT
I ran the test over, using 3/4/04 daily build floppies. On the
first attempt, the http download hung. Went back to select mirrors, picked
ftp.us.debian.org.
Got to disk layout. Created ext2 filesystems, assigned and mounted
partitions. Installer started retrieving packages.
At the end of base system install, the menu returned to "Install the
base system". Hitting that ended in:
Base system installation error
The debootstrap program exited with an error (Return value 1).
In /target/var/log/debootstrap.log I found:
ln: /target/usr/bin/awk: file exists
umount: /target/dev/pts: invalid argument
umount: /target/dev/shm: invalid argument
umount: /target/proc/bus/usb: invalid argument
DOCUMENTATION PROBLEMS NOTED
1. There are 4 images at the root of the floppies directory on the server.
There is also an "access" subdirectory with 3 more images in it. Nothing in
the HOWTO or in README files in the directory explains which set of images
to use, or why there are two sets. I tested the first set of floppy images.
2. The HOWTO explains about expert mode. The welcome screen doesn't
mention that it's available. "Hit <F1> for help" isn't enough of a hint.
