Bug#236730: Install loads 3c59x, but no connectivity

Package: install
Version: sarge-i386-netinst.iso beta 2

Got to the point where it's ready to retrieve packages
via http or ftp and it became apparent that the machine's
ethernet connection was not up. (Had used same manual IP address
configuration to 192.168.7.4 which the machine has always used).
Other machines on the LAN can't ping it. Drop into
console and I can't ping out to the router or other LAN machines.
(Lights on router and card are at least on though).
Inspect /var/log/boot and see 3c59x is detected (correctly) &
loaded.
/var/log/dmesg and messages also seems to have some
stuff about 3c905c being detected, no errors.
(Actually, I have another machine running sarge with an
identical card and that uses 3c59x no problem).

Later on there seem to be some error messages re PCMCIA services
(i82365.o and ds.o), which seems a bit odd (this isn't a laptop).

This hardware was running bf2.4 woody (and connected) just fine
for the last few months up until the debian installer was dropped
in its CD tray today. Wish I'd kept a copy of the woody boot log for
comparison. Had RH9 on it before that, no network problems then either.

Motherboard is a Chaintech "7kjd, amd761+8231", with an XP1800+.
PCI network card of unknown pedigree. Nvidia TNT AGP graphics card.

I don't know a whole lot about kernels and modules... if there
is some file or command output I should post which would nail
this please let me know and I'll try and get it out via floppy.

Tim
