Yes, that's what debconf does in its dialog frontend if the extended description is too large to be displayed in a single dialog. It displays the extended description first, in a scrolling text box, and then asks the question using only the short description. I can easily reproduce this by running dpkg-reconfigure -fdialog man-db in an 80x25 xterm. I suggest you try to shorten the length of that extended description by about 3 lines. -- see shy jo
