I was using the test installer ISO from here: http://people.debian.org/~blade/boot-floppies/cvs/bootbf2.4.iso When I got to the menu system's module selection, tulip wasn't listed anywhere. I managed to install it with insmod though. I tried to install apm, which my system does have, and got an error (the device is not present). Using the same kernel earlier (but not with this installer), it loaded OK.
