This is not related to the input being a .so file, but rather to mklibs'
inability to handle references to global data symbols.  Someone else
reported a similiar issue recently, and I did start modifying mklibs to
fix it, but this seems to have introduced some other problems that I
haven't had a chance to sort out yet.

The "xxx is a library" remark is just conversational, it doesn't
indicate that anything is wrong.
