Bug#222308: PCMCIA doesn't work with Dell Latitude LM

Package: debian-installer
Version: "current" as of Nov 24, 2003
This is a continuation of a report filed earlier, where I was having
problems with a Dell Latitude LM laptop and the Linksys PCMCIA network
card it has. In short, the debian installer was unable to recognize the
Linksys card and gave me errors everytime it tried 'insmod tulip'.
I did some further research and found one website that explains several
issues with this laptop. It can be found here:
http://staff.washington.edu/donelson/laboratory/latitudelm.php. It
mentions that the 2.4 kernel with built in pcmcia drivers do not work
with the PCI to PCMCIA bridge this laptop has. The solution is to
recompile the kernel with out PCMCIA and rebuild PCMCIA from scratch
using the source. Would it be possible to recompile the PCMCIA as a
bunch of modules in the installer, or make an optional version of the
installer using PCMCIA modules?
