I am speaking about the boot floppy. I can hear the kernel
being read from it (this process takes a few minutes) as the
penguin icon is displayed, and then when one would normally
begin to see boot messages and an opportuinty to insert a root
floppy, everything stops.

I'll try to adjust some modules based on what works on the 9500 
from 2.2.20.
