Netinst ISO: NIC driver module and other problems

The official "testing" netinst of 2003-05-09 (tried both "netinst" and
"businesscard") failed to load the ethernet card driver for me. Upon
choosing "1. 3c59x", the installer said "modprobe: Can't locate module
3c59x". The same error occured with any other module I chose, even when
I chose "13. other" and typed in the module path manually.

Despite my being a Linux newbee, I decided to open a shell and try
solving the problem myself. After some looking around and some googling,
I realized that none of the NIC drivers is mentioned in
"/lib/modules/2.4.20-1-386/module.dep". So I simply added
"/lib/modules/2.4.20-1-386/kernel/drivers/net/3x59x.o:" to this file,
came back to the installer prompt and chose "1. 3c59x" again. Magically,
the driver is loaded now!

After succefully configuring the network via DHCP, there came another
problem. Domain name resolving seems not to work, although the content
of "/etc/resolv.conf" was correct. I'm not sure if this is because my
"fix" of the previous problem was not quite right. As a workaround I
manually typed in the IP address of the Debian mirror I wanted to use.

After that, "11. Partition a hard drive" (not "OLD", but the new one)
failed since it tried to configure sda althought I don't have a SCSI
drive there at all. So I partitioned the drive using "12. Partition a
hard drive (OLD)", then unmounted it using "17. Mount/Unmount a
partition (OLD)", finally created an EXT3 FS using "14. Configure and
Mount Partitions".

Ultimately, "19. Install the kernel" failed, "Couldn't find package
kernel-image-2.4.20-1-386". That's not suprising, since in
"/cdrom/pool/main/k/" I could only find "kernel-iamge-2.4.19-i386" and
"kernel-image-2.4.20-1-i386-udeb", both not the one required...
