Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A; reported 2002-07-12
Severity: important

I was trying to install Debian on my Dell Inspiron 4100 with a Mobile
Radeon in it and it would freeze during install randomly, anywhere
between 2 and 10 minutes after bootup. I tracked it down to the vga16
framebuffer (found a similar note on a linux-laptop website, but can't find the link
now...). I couldn't find any kernel parameter to disable the framebuffer
so I compiled a new kernel without fb support, put it on the install
floppy and it worked like a charm.

I don't see why the fb is enabled anyway since Debian still uses an
ncurses install, it just makes it slower (for my hardware anyway).

I can provide more information if need be.

Try video=vga16:off; it's mentioned on the F5 page when you boot up,
along with the other "SPECIAL BOOT ARGUMENTS".

For i18n... Japanese, for one, cannot be displayed without the framebuffer.
