I think there scsi drivers may not be compiled into the kernel, the
new powermacs don't normally have SCSI. Colin Walters may jump in to
let us know. If so, you may have to compile a kernel beforehand with
2950 drivers and substitute on the CD you build.

I'm certain it's not too old, only the bleeding edge is past 2.4.16.

There is a script for building a powerpc iso at 

cvs.debian.org/boot-floppies/powerpc-specials/nini-iso.sh
 
You can build it with or without basedebs.tar. It uses the
new-powermac flavor, which is now 2.4.18.

'bf2.4' is an i386 flavor. You want new-powermac instead.
