Hung on Uncompressing Linux

I have a bootable Debian 2.2 CD set that boots fine and begins loading linux then hangs on “Uncompressing Linux”.

The system is a Compaq Deskpro 6000 with a 200MHZ Pentium CPU and 256 MB or RAM. It has a Adaptec 2940 SCSI Contoller with a SCSI HD and SCSI CDROM. Video is Matrox Millennium and sound is ISA ESS board. I have tried the aic78xx=no_reset switch and I have disabled the IDE controller since it is not used.

The system currently has Windows XP Professional on it and operates normally under routine operation.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
