Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A; reported 2001-02-25
Severity: wishlist
So this idea has been popping up now and again on #Debian the past few
days, and I wanted to make sure it was written down somewhere.
In short: Create a bootable CD image containing the installer and "base
floppies", so that people can avoid using floppies as an installation
medium, but not have to download full-sized 0.6 gigabyte ISO.
CD burners and systems with bootable CD drives are becoming more common,
and as they do, people's willingness to use floppy disks as an
installation medium is decreasing. After all, it's not like we ever
*liked* floppies that much, and many systems today are being assembled
without them. And while you do end up with a coaster every now and then
when working with CDs, they may well be more durable and reliable than
old magnetic discs.
You can have the best of both worlds. The use of a CD means you have
just one to keep track of, not two or twelve. A small image means you
can do a net install and not download several huge ISOs you don't need
most of. And most of importantly of all...
You *don't* have to touch floppies!

<ij> Alfie: schonmal davon gehoert, dass nicht jeder linux user gleich ein
programmierer ist, der alles, was er selber braucht, auch selber
programmiert, installiert, patched, hacked oder portiert?
<Alfie> ij: Urks? Das ist doch nur eine Legende.....
