Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A; reported 2001-12-21
Severity: important

boot-floppies version 3.0.18

'make check_depends' demands the builder to install utf8 libs when
building b-f w/o language chooser:

bash-2.05a$ make check_depends
dpkg-checkbuilddeps
checking variable dependancies
  didn't find slang1-utf8-pic
    didn't find slang1-utf8
      didn't find libnewt-utf8-0
To install missing packages: apt-get install slang1-utf8-pic
slang1-utf8 libnewt-utf8-0
make: *** [check_depends] Error 1

If the advice/demand is followed, the built b-f will be broken; (all
strings are chopped at the first occurence of a non-english letter)

If the advice/demand is ignored, b-f builds fine. I have the following
relevant packages installed:

bash-2.05a$ dpkg --get-selections|grep install|grep slang
libterm-slang-perl install
slang1 install
slang1-dev install
slang1-pic install
bash-2.05a$ dpkg --get-selections|grep install|grep libnewt
libnewt-dev install
libnewt-perl install
libnewt-pic install
libnewt0 install

Sorry, this bug is pretty much completely invalid.

I *have* to enforce utf8 libs for i18n build, it is required to build
with those. That's how than lang chooser work.

Sure, *certain* i386 flavors use kernels w/o FBCON support and thus
they get i18n turned off for that root disk. But they still build
against the i18n libs because they have to.

As for being forced to use english as the only language for non-i18n
flavors of an i38n build, that's complete bunk. It will use whatever
LINGUA is set to, just like non-i18n builds.
