We had very much the same experiences with our SMC8416 NICs. The solution we found that
worked was to *turn on* the SMC8416 Plug-and-Play setting and use the ISApnp utilities to
initialize the card(s). The downside of this solution: if you perform a reboot without
powering down the computer, the isapnp utilities fail to initialize the SMC NICs, so a
full power down must be performed every time a reboot is necessary. Our SMC NICs have been
performing well.
