help please

Hi,
I am trying to
install debian 2.2r4 on a P3 500 with 256 MB ram 8Gb HDD.
I have
previously installed Mandrake 8.1 on this PC/HDD successfully ( I had to
use VGAlow mode).
I have now installed
Debian, and it boots up from HHD and leaves me in a text only mode. All I
can seem to do is log in and out as root (or user) and do nothing
else!
I don't know,
but surely debian has some form of GUI?
