I seem to have been looking at the wrong kernel-config file; on double-checking, I find that the "compact" flavor has only SERIAL and SERIAL_CONSOLE, but *not* SERIAL_NONSTANDARD -- which sounds like what I need. I'll try installing the "vanilla" flavor, and see if that solves the problem. -- Andy Young
