Try: CFLAGS='-Os -fomit-frame-pointer' ./configure --enable-elf-shlibs --disable-swapfs --disable-imager --disable-resizer --disable-debugfs

The -Os saved over 2k from -O2 on my box (i386 gcc-2.95 1:2.95.4-1)

There's no point optimising for speed for a rescue/boot disk, IMHO :-)
