in fact, dropping -z3 gets a checkout to run as far as cvs server: Updating boot-floppies/utilities/bf-utf and hang, as has been mentioned here previously. Now to see if I have enough pieces to try building a disk for this "legacy free" system [USB-only keyboard, only external media is a CDROM drive...]
