package: boot-floppies
version: download 2/08/2001

hello,
I've been trying to install debian linux potato and have recieved an =
error.

flavor:compact
architecture:i386
model: acer acros 486sx33mhz
RAM: 4mb
no scsi
cd-rom: ATAPI
no network card=20
no pcmcia devices

Starting from the top. I downloaded the 1.44 mb disk images via ftp from =
umich. The rescue floppy works fine and I get the initial boot prompt. =
when I press enter or add arguments the kernel "appears" to load. The =
system then tells me to put in the root floppy and press enter. I do =
that and then I get the message "VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for =
swapper" . This message scrolls up the screen ad infinitum.=20

I know it would be a lot easier to try and do this from a CD but I dont =
have the cash right now and the local libraries don't have any books =
that have software with them.=20

Directions on either how to fix this, alternate boot up method (i'm =
downloading everything to one computer and using floppies to transer to =
another computer upon which I am installing Linux.), or the location of =
trobleshooting info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

This is some sort of kernel issue. Please try the idepci flavor of
rescue/root/drivers. If that doesn't work, then please search in
dejanews or google or whatever and see what they think It could be
that you have bad ram or something. there are ram scrubbers out
there.

Also check the boot arg howto (www.linuxdoc.org) for possible kernel
arguments.

Anyhow, if there's a bug here, it would have to be some sort of kernel
issue. I am closing this bug against boot-floppies, but if you find
there is a kernel bug, pelase file a new bug against
kernel-image-2.2.18pre21-idepci (phew!)
