Hmm.. Are you sure that

"zcat /etc/keymaps.tgz | tar -xOf - %s%s.bmap | loadkmap", prefix, choices[rs].tag);

will work without prefix? This will probably mean modifying the
contents of keymaps.tgz, right? I'd say it would be better to
modify the LC part...
