Those are the only i386 flavors that do, yes. Not sure about other
platforms; I think most of them use fb.

Ultimately, yes. It's the only way this will ever be mainstream.

Ok. Can you do me a favor? File an 'Important' bug against
boot-floppies to do this hacking. That way we will be sure not to
forget it and if someone wants to work on it they can mention so in
the bug log.
