Bug#69141: boot-floppies: Can dd with volume management on in Solaris

Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A
Severity: wishlist

Just a little nit to pick with the installation manual. The
manual says that with Solaris volume management must be off
to write the boot floppies, but this isn't true. Even with
volume management on, you can get raw access to the floppy
(or CD). Attached is a diff to the installation manual that
explains how it is done.

place it in the drive. You might have to disable this feature before
the workstation will allow you to write a floppy in <em>raw mode</em>.
Unfortunately, how to accomplish this will vary based on your

On other systems, ask your system administrator.

place it in the drive. You might have to disable this feature before
the workstation will allow you to write a floppy in <em>raw mode</em>.
Unfortunately, how to accomplish this will vary based on your
! operating system. On Solaris, you can get work around volume
! management to get raw access to the floppy. First, make certain that
! the floppy is automounted (using <prgn>volcheck</prgn> or the equivalent
! command in the file manager). The use a <prgn>dd</prgn> command of the
! form given above, except replace <file>/dev/fd0</file> with <file>
! /vol/rdsk/<var>floppy_name</var></file> (where <var>floppy_name</var>
! is the name the floppy disk was given when it was formatted -
! unnamed floppies default to the name <file>unnamed_floppy</file>.
On other systems, ask your system administrator.
