Sorry, this is slightly incorrect.  This appears to be a Linux 2.4 issue

I've just successfully built bf 2.2.15 under Linux 2.3.99 - I suspect
it's
related to recent goings on with handling of mounted filing systems.
Still, something for someone to investigate.
