Well, on all my machines, I have LANG set to 'sv' and LC_ALL set to 'sv_SE'.
This way, I have programs speaking to me in my native tongue, which is
something I prefer. I even took it so far as to actually constribute with a
Swedish translation of dpkg/dselect to get it to speak Swedish to me.
I've never had any problems caused by that.
