Bug#57624: kernel install from filesystem hangs

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 2.2.6

Installing onto a Toshiba Portege from compact 2.2.6 image. When I try to
install the kernel/modules from a DOS partition on /dev/hda1 the installer
hangs with a blue screen, a load of 0.8, only dbootstrap running.
Reproducible, and with either the mounted or harddisk options. When booted
with debug option, get the messages:
user.debug dbootstrap[18]: looking for disks-1.44/compact/rescue.bin under
/mnt/temp/debian
user.debug dbootstrap[18]: found pattern disks-1.44/compact/rescue.bin under
/mnt/temp/debian
then hangs for at least 10 minutes.

Works fine when I dd the contents of the same drivers file to a floppy and
use the floppy method.

Will try with another machine and with the non-compact boot disks.
