I don't understand why you think that would be more intuitive.
IMHO, it would be less intuitive.

Furthermore, what is in the release dir is irrelevant -- what is
relevant is the structure which is finally installed, and that can be
found in dists/potato/main/disks-i386/current.

Have you read the top-level README-Users.m4 file?

I don't see why you say this would help.

Do you grok the difference between sub-architectures and flavors?  Do
you understand that flavors share files, such as base?  You're
proposed system would hide that.
