Due to the way mirroring works this isn't practical.
[Why '\'?   This isn't DOS!]

The other reason this isn't practical is that the base system, which
is base2_2.tgz and a slew of base floppies, is not language dependant
in any fashion. I'm not even sure the boot disk (just containing the
Linux kernel) is localized -- I am not up on such matters, however.

At any rate, much i shared between the different languages. What
varies?

  * root disk
  * documentation
  * boot disk and drivers (not sure)

Huh? This is why we have CVS access!

Not sure what you mean.

Why would drivers vary per language?

On the other hand, given the current scheme, a single person could
loop over and make all versions of boot-floppies, simply setting
LINGUA.

I don't see how the distribution mechanism you propose would solve any
maintenance problems.

I would rather welcome all hackers into the fold, all working on the
same CVS area.

As for distribution, I would rather see it all distributed together in
the central repository. Thus we might have:

dists/stable/main/disks-i386/current/          -- top level
                                     common/   -- non lang-dependant stuff
                                     en/       -- EN stuff
                                     en/base2_2.tgz -> ../common/base2_2.tgz
                                     pt/
                                     ...
