Sometimes the system can *boot* from CD-ROM, even though the linux
kernel cannot mount or interact with it. That would happen if the
bios knows about your CD-ROM but the kernel doesn't. However, you say
it's an ATAPI CD-ROM, which is quite standard, and should work.
Did you ever fix this?
If you still have a problem, can you include the complete kernel boot
messages which come up (they should appear in /var/log/kern.log) ?
