multicd (I think) - I have a two disc main/contrib set.

Ah - I didnt realise - I've got a feeling that the out of disc space error
was coming from dpkg; but what ever was calling it ignored the error.
Also dpkg managed to get itself a partially installed package which was in
a state where it wouldn't delete it unless I reinstalled the package - I
think this was also due to lack of disc space.

P.S. On another front, in /etc/init.d/ppp there is a line something like

start-stop-daemon ...blah.... /usr/sbin/pppd -- connect to isp

At least for me I reckon the '-- connect to isp' confused pppd - so I took
it out!
