You should be able to see the version from the first screen when the

Well, slink and potato are actually the same disks at this point, AFAIK.

So the kernel comes up properly, correct?
Did you try booting as 'linux floppy=thinkpad' ? This is most likely
your problem.

Doubtful -- by the time your loading root.bin, control has been passed
to the kernel.
