Summary: Low memory installation on 386sx, 4MB PC halts when trying to boot
from the temporary MINIX partition. This partition seems to be corrupt.

I boot from the Rescue floppy by typing floppy0 at the boot: prompt, then
insert the Low Memory Root disk when told to do so. I create MINIX, Swap
and Linux native partitions, initialise the swap, and copy the root floopy
to the temporary minix partition.

I reboot and type "lowmemboot root=/dev/hda1" at the boot: prompt and the
system freezes right after the "mounting unchecked MINIX partition".
Alt-F1/F2 doesn't work.

Investigations of the copying of /dev/fd0 to /dev/hda1 reveal that the
Minix partition somehow gets corrupted. Mounting /dev/hda1 immediately
after "cat /dev/fd0 >/dev/hda1" reveals nondeterministic results. Sometimes
entire directories are missing or libraries corrupted. Deleting all files
in the partition and doing "df" reveals 50% capacity.

I managed to copy /dev/fd0 to /dev/fd1 (a 1.2MB 5.25inch drive); typed
floppy1 at the boot: prompt and managed to get further in the installation
process. Unfortunately a problem occurred when installing the Base system
(5 disk files). The base1_3.tar.gz was somehow corrupted in the "ext2"
Linux native partition. "zcat" and "star" fail to extract the file
completely. Remounting the linux native partition reveals that the
partition is inconsistent.

Linux probes the hard disk and reports it as follows:

hda: QUANTUM ELS85A, 81MB w/32kB Cache, CHS=977/10/17
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7, 0x3f6 on irq14

The BIOS defaults for the Hard drive are type 47, Cylinders 977, Heads 10,
Sectors 17, wpmod 0, LZone 977
