Package: Rescue disc
Version: Debian 1.3.1

Hello everyone,

booting Debian-1.3.1 from its rescue disc (to begin installation...) on a
newly bought Soyo mainboard "5VM2/M5" with AMD K6/166 processor shows
strange symptoms: After the first initialisation steps of the Kernel
(Linux 2.0.29, Debian 1.3.1 Rescue Disc) the system crashes and does a
cold reset. The crash is always at the same stage: Somewhere shortly after
"checking 'hlt' instruction - ok".

The board has 32 MByte SDRAM and an AMD K6/166 processor. As there have
been no other components than the board, the processor, the RAM and the
floppy disc drive, no other components can cause this behaviour. Board,
processor and RAM have been changed to exclude any aribitrary hardware
failues.

Unfortunately I don't know the version of the board BIOS.

Is this a known incompatibility of some of these components with Linux?
Perhaps someone can give me some advice on what to do. I would be very
thankful.

Greetings,
Dirk Hillbrecht
