Package: kernel-image
Version: 2.2.18pre21-udma66

Priority: "Important" (ref. 11/28 message from Adam Di Carlo to Jim =
Wolf)

---------------------

I am unable to install downloaded Debian 2.2r1 udma66 base system on an =
ATA/66 drive attached to a Promise Ultra66 controller. The Ultra66 and =
all attached HDs work fine with Windows 98.

Drives on my PIII with 128MB memory are configured as follows. The three =
ATA/66 HDs are attached via 80-wire cables.

UDMA33 motherboard connectors
  ide0 hda - (nothing attached)
        hdb - (nothing attached)
  ide1 hdc - CDROM
        hdd - CDROM

Ultra66 connectors
  ide2 hde - IBM 371800 ATA/66 (contains Win98 partitions C: and E:)
        hdf - (nothing attached)
  ide3 hdg - IBM 371350 ATA/66 (contains Win98 partition D:)
        hdh - Quantum Fireball ect08 04 ATA/66 (not partitioned)

Booting with the udma66 rescue.bin floppy (no options entered at boot: =
prompt) shows first part of load sequence, then stops at line showing =
first instance of

  hde: IBM 371800...

Entering Ultra66 I/O addresses as options at boot: prompt (e.g., "linux =
ide2=3D0xdc00 ide3=3D0xe400,0xe800") carries the load sequence further, =
ending with

  Partition check:
  hde: [PTBL] [1027/255/63] hde1 hde2 <hde5>
  hdg: [PTBL] [1027/255/63] hdg1
  hdh:=20
  VFS: Insert root floppy....

(Seems o.k. to this point. The drive at hdh has no partitions. It was =
cleared with DOS fdisk, and is intended for Linux installation.)

The root floppy then loads o.k., and continues the install sequence o.k. =
until it gets to disk partitioning and the "Select Disk Drive" page. But =
the *ONLY* option it displays is

  /dev/hde

I would expect it to list all three HDs (hde, hdg, and hgh). I want to =
re-partition and initialize *ONLY* the empty Quantum drive attached at =
hdh.

P.S. -- I have not tried the work-around of temporarily reinstalling the =
target HD on motherboard controller (ide0) in order to install Linux.

Thank you very much for your bug report. We believe the issue you
reported is solved as of boot-floppies 2.3.1. That is the woody
version of boot-floppies, which is available in the archive, or, some
SPARC and i386, at
<URL:http://people.debian.org/~aph/debian/dists/woody/main/>.

If you feel your bug is still outstanding, please let us know or
reopen your bug -- see <http://www.debian.org/Bugs/> for instructions
how to do that.

We are not longer working on Potato boot-floppies, except for critical
issues. If you feel that your bug hasn't been fixed as of
boot-floppies 2.2.22 (the latest Potato version), then you we need to
reopen your bug and put the 'potato' tag on it. Please be sparing --
the more we are distracted with Potato issues, the less effort we are
able to put into Woody boot-floppies.

Again, thanks for your report. Bug reports are a significant
contribution to Debian. We apologize that it probably took so long to
fix the issue you reported.
