Problem with installation for original release of Potato.

Hi Folks.

I've a problem with the base system install of potato (original)

The computer is an AMD K6-2-350 on an ASUS P5A-B with a WD 10Gb IDE,
S3 Trio 3D/SX video and a 3Com 905B network card. The HD already has
potato installed, but the enduser wants a second operating system :-(
so I want to reinstall potato.

I'm using the idepci rescue & root floppies from
kernel-image-2.2.17-idepci_2.2.17pre6-1

The rescue floppy reads fine, and the root disk seems to load OK too.

Up come the Release Notes beginning

This is the Debian Rescue floppy, version 2.2.16

I hit Enter to continue, the screen blinks a few times and returns to
the Release Notes page. If I try hitting Return a few times, *occasionally*
the message

trying to determine the state of my system

appears very briefly on the screen, before inevitably returning to the
Release Notes.

Has anyone else reported this behaviour? Do I have to pass any special
arguments to the boot procedure for a reinstall?

Thanks in advance.

Jim
