did you include linux-image-2.6-486 in your test.packages? it's best to
let debian-installer's linux-image selection work instead (that menu of
kernels to install).  if you want something other than the -486 kernels
included on the CD, you could include it in profiles/test.downloads.
(assuming you're using "test" as your profile)

yes. that's the proper way to select a kernel.

if you want startx, add xbase-clients to your profiles/test.packages.

i've never once ran build-simple-cdd as root, and intend to ensure
that's never a requirement. i recommend against running it as root. what
problem did you have that was fixed by running as root?
