Since I don't have mpich installed right now, I could only say
the MPI libs fail at it, because I remember having had to modify
/etc/hosts.equiv, the rsh method is a really slow and irritating method.
If you can use their server based method to run, I think it's better.
It did have some authentication tweaks as I remember but, but
you can work it out from the manual. It's a lot better than PVM anyway!
Did you try MPICH's trace facility? I recall something like
trace: $(OBJS)
