Thanks for the answer, Jonathan.
I am not interested in sshguard to expose an actual SSH daemon on port 22, but
to block brute-force attacks on other services like FTP, IMAP and SMTP [1]
and, according to its website [2], it is better than a "pure-firewall
solution".

I think a package like that could be very useful on Debian backports.
Moreover sshguard has been available on testing for some time now [3].
