You can always set that program on hold before the upgrade and then upgrade
as much as is possible with that.
Or run the troubling program in a chroot (using schroot) with otherwise
only the smallest part of jessie installed.
Or upgrade to buster. It’s as good as stable. The people around me are
treating it as stable as soon as the hard freeze begins (except for not
yet using unattended upgrades). Perhaps the application is fixed there?
