I had almost finished to create an octave backport (I am the
co-maintainer of that package) when I saw your message.

I have uploaded my backport (it is currently in the NEW queue). The
debdiff with wheezy is very similar to yours, although a few details are
different (w.r.t. HDF5 dependencies and /etc/octave.conf in particular).
