I have /var and /tmp on lvm2 partitions with 3.2.0-0.bpo.4-i386 and the machines in question boot fine. So maybe the problem is amd64-specific? What you describe could be a fairly significant bug -- depending on the details, it might cause breakage on half-upgraded systems in the squeeze→wheezy transition, even if they're not using squeeze-backports. i'd like to make sure this isn't something that needs to be resolved in a stable point release directly. --dkg
